Richard completes his seventh season with the Metropolitan Opera this
Spring with four more performances as Goro in Puccini's Madama
Butterfly. Richard appeared in twenty performances earlier this
season, both in Madama Butterfly and in Strauss's Die
Frau Ohne Schatten as the Night Watchman. Richard's performances
in Madama Butterfly will be nationally broadcast via
Texaco's Live from the Met radio broadcast series on March
30th, representing the most recent of several national broadcasts in which
Richard has performed with the Metropolitan Opera. Upcoming events include
three concerts in Norway as well as three concerts in China with three
other Metropolitan singers. Negotiations have been completed with the
Jackson Symphony (Michigan) to perform Tosca in the Spring
of 2003.
Other recent performances include concerts
in San Antonio and Lansing along with recent engagements with the
Metropolitan Opera in Prokofiev's The Gambler and Puccini's Turandot.
Richard's recital "Special Deliveries: Musical Messages from
New York 9/11" proved an intense but overwhelmingly moving
evening. Plans for repeat performances are moving forward for both Lansing
and Great Mid-Michigan.
Richard's recent concert appearances
included Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with Western Michigan
University, Handel's Messiah with the Lansing Symphony,
Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the Grand Rapids Symphony and
Britten's Serenade for Tenor and Horn with the Jackson
Symphony. Richard has also recently appeared with the Grand Rapids Opera
as the title character in Philip Glass's Fall of the House of Usher
as well as Pong in Puccini's Turandot.
Career highlights include world debuts of
Philip Glass's Hydrogen Jukebox and Orphee, as
well as performing the lead tenor role in the Metropolitan Opera's
production of
The Voyage. Richard also made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1998 in
Glass's Civil Wars to critical acclaim.
Richard has performed leading tenor roles
in Spain, Italy and Iceland and in nearly every state in the United
States. Richard has participated in the prestigious Spoleto Festival
(Italy) and the Saito Kinen Festival (Japan) and has worked
with such illustrious conductors as James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Carlos
Kleiber, Nello Santi, Valery Gergiev and Marco Armeliato.
Richard appears frequently in concert and
in recital. A full list of upcoming local appearances (Greater
Mid-Michigan area) appears on Richard's web site calendar.
Richard continues to teach privately and regularly conducts master classes
between professional engagements. Richard recently made his directorial
debut in Michigan State University's well-received production of
Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. Further directorial
appearances are planned.
